1. Project for the Improvement of Operation and Treatment of Medical Waste Management in Vientiane City

The opening ceremony of an incinerator in Vientiane city

1)Objective:

Based on the feasibility survey for improving the operation and treatment of medical waste management in Vientiane City from 2016 to 2017, the verification survey was conducted to realize the project.

The objective of the survey was to improve the management of medical and other hazardous waste in Vientiane city by installing a new incinerator in a 32 KM landfill, introducing the Japanese guideline for medical waste management, and promoting the method of separating hazardous and non-industrial waste.

(2)Our work:

Dr. Hirotaka Onishi, Assistant Professor, made occurrence predictions and monitor hazardous waste. 

(3) Term: 15 Dec. 2018 to 31 Aug. 2020


2.Feasibility Survey for Improving Operation and Treatment of Medical Waste Management in Vientiane City

(1) Objective of Survey:

The objective of the survey is to improve the management of medical and other hazardous waste in Vientiane city by installing a new incinerator in a 32 KM landfill, introducing the Japanese guideline for medical waste management, and promoting the method of separating hazardous and non-industrial waste. The survey also aims to develop a business plan by collecting and analyzing medical and other dangerous waste information.

(2) Our Work:

Dr. Hirotaka Onishi, Assistant Professor,  surveyed the Kayama Kogyo Co. Ltd. team, which was commissioned to survey JICA. He was in charge of promoting cooperation among medical institutions and verifying the condition of waste treatment in hospitals.

3.Project of Capacity Development of Medical Education Research at Setthathirat Hospital

(1) Project Outline

(1) Background:

The Setthathirat Hospital received JICA’s Grant aid for constructing a new building with 175 beds, and the work was completed in November 2000. This hospital was the only medical university in Laos. This project provided refinement of clinical and postgraduate training; thus, it improved the medical situation in Laos. 

 (2) Objective:

To improve the clinical and postgraduate training system by expanding the knowledge and skills of clinics in the hospital, improving the clinic education system, and capacity development of staff and students of Setthathirat Hospital.

(3) Term: December 2007 – November 2010 (3 Years)

(2)Our Work

IRCME formed a consortium with System Science Consultant Inc. and conducted an onsite survey. We provided technical training to Laotian teachers both in Japan and Laos to raise their capacity , and ameliorate the education management system.


4. Follow up Project of Capacity Development of Medical Education Research at Setthathirat Hospital

Dr. Hirotaka Onishi, Assistant Professor, was dispatched as JICA short-term expert twice (29 Nov. – 21 Dec. 2011, 18 Jan – Feb 2012) to discuss with relevant authorities and organized seminars and workshops.
